How long does it take to set up an Estonian company with e-Residency?
Most of the wait is for e-Residency: the decision is due within 30 days (source: politsei.ee, checked 3 Oct 2026), then the card usually takes 2–5 weeks (source: politsei.ee, checked 3 Oct 2026) to reach your pickup point. Online, the registrar reviews the OÜ application within 1 working day (source: riigiteataja.ee, checked 3 Oct 2026).

The steps, in order
Setting up takes a series of steps, and most of them wait on the one before. The table gives the typical time for each step, taken from the source linked beside each figure.
| Step | What happens | Typical time |
|---|---|---|
| Apply for e-Residency | You fill in the online application, upload your documents and pay the state fee | The form itself is short |
| Identity check | The Police and Border Guard Board checks your application and background | Within 30 days (source: politsei.ee, checked 3 Oct 2026), which can be extended |
| Card delivery | The approved card is made and sent to the pickup location you chose | 2–5 weeks (source: politsei.ee, checked 3 Oct 2026) |
| Pickup | You collect the card in person and give fingerprints | One appointment |
| Legal address and contact person | A service provider sets up the company’s address in Estonia, or a contact person if the address is abroad | 1–7 days (source: e-resident.gov.ee, checked 3 Oct 2026) |
| Company registration | You submit the application in the e-Business Register’s portal and sign it with the card | Reviewed within 1 working day (source: riigiteataja.ee, checked 3 Oct 2026) (expedited procedure) |
| Business account | The bank or payment institution checks the company and its owners | Depends on the provider (see below) |
| First invoice | The company can invoice clients once registered | As soon as you are ready |
Once you have the card, setup is quick. The digital ID card is what lets you sign the registration and log in to Estonian services, so the calendar mostly depends on the e-Residency steps. The setup timeline tool turns these durations into dated milestones from your start date and exports them to your calendar.
What you can do while you wait
Several steps don’t depend on the card, so you can do them during the identity check and card delivery.
- Choose a company name and check it is free in the e-Business Register.
- Choose a service provider and ask when it can supply your legal address and contact person.
- Decide who the shareholders and board members will be, and the amount of share capital.
- Compare banking options and gather the documents providers ask for.
- Check whether the company will need VAT registration early on.
The guide on what you need to apply and register lists everything the application and the registration ask for.
How long a business account takes
Opening a business account is often the least predictable step. Payment and e-money institutions usually onboard online, while Estonian banks usually ask for an in-person visit. The times the providers themselves state are below. LHV publishes no typical time.
| Figure | Value | Source | Last checked |
|---|---|---|---|
| Time Wise says its business verification review usually takes (upper end) | 10 working days | wise.com | 3 Oct 2026 |
| Time Revolut says its business verification usually takes | 1–5 working days | help.revolut.com | 27 Sept 2026 |
Treat these as typical, not guaranteed. Providers can ask for more information about your business, your clients or the source of your funds before they decide.
What usually causes delays
Most delays come from missing information, not from the steps themselves.
- Questions during the identity check. If the Police and Border Guard Board needs more information, the check takes longer. A clear motivation statement and correct documents help.
- Pickup appointments. Some pickup locations are busier than others. Check appointment availability before you choose.
- Company name. The registry can ask you to change a name that is too similar to an existing company or doesn’t meet the naming rules.
- Banking checks. Account providers assess each company separately. Being an e-resident doesn’t guarantee an account.
If you already have e-Residency
If you already have a valid card, skip straight to the legal address and registration steps. From there, how soon the company can invoice mostly depends on your service provider and account provider. Check that the card will stay valid for a while: it lasts 5 years (source: politsei.ee, checked 3 Oct 2026), and renewal means a new application. Common questions
- Can I register the company before my card arrives?
- Not online, unless you already have another electronic ID that the registry's instructions list for signing: an Estonian ID card, Mobile-ID or Smart-ID. The alternative is registering through an Estonian notary, which has its own process and costs.
- Can I speed up the e-Residency check?
- Not directly. Complete and accurate documents are the best way to avoid extra questions that add time.
- When can I send my first invoice?
- Once the company is registered it can invoice. In practice most founders wait until the business account is open so clients have somewhere to pay.
